Oral Presentation

For this oral presentation, I have spent a great deal of time preparing and rehearsing my speech. What I did was to internalize the outline of my speech, read the proposal a couple of times, and then it was practice, practice and more practice. I think the more I rehearsed, the more confident I felt, and it made me less nervous today.

Just to refresh everyone's memory, I talked about the 3 unhappy faces versus 1 happy face, the 7:1 ratio and the 3 cases in NTU, Hong Kong and UK.

For my delivery, I think one of my strengths this time round was that I made a point to pause at the right places and emphasize words appropriately. That was something that I did not do in the past. I tried my best to speak as fluently as I could, and to pronounce the words clearly and accurately. However, there were still occasions when my words rolled over themselves, especially when it came to big jargons. So, I still need to improve on that.

With regards to my pace, some people have said I spoke too fast, while others have commented that the speed was okay. So, I need your input, as to how whether my pace was alright or I should have slowed down.

As for nonverbal cues, I realized (after watching the video) that I had lots of gestures this time round. I hope it was not too distracting. Other than that, I think I did well in turning to visual aids effectively, having effective eye contact and a good posture.

Finally, if you have any suggestions for me to improve my presentation skills, please feel free to comment. Thanks in advance!

  1. Hi, Yong Feng

Here are the points that I have taken down
    -Very fluent
    -Looked confident
    -Accurate pronunciation
    -Good eye contact
-Good transition to the next person
-Very good visual aids, like the unhappy and happy faces

Besides, in response to what you have written, I think your speed of speaking was appropriate and your gestures were not distracting. Good job~~

  3. Hi YongFeng,

we did a good job, and thanks for your efforts.

i think that our rehearsal helped us, and everyone did some change accordingly and improved a lot.

i think your speed was OK, because you had to cover quite a lot of contents. btw, we all controlled our time successfully!

i also agree my voice was kind of soft and unclear, due to my poor Chinese pronunciation and low volume. i will mind these and try to improve! thanks for your feedback.

    see you on Fri.

  4. Yes Senlin! I thought the changes you made were impressive! Especially the example about skipping lectures for lunch and vice versa.

Thanks for the thumbs-up sign that day! :)

  5. Hi Yong Feng,

Thanks for your frank review about my presentation on the other day! I think your explanation of the statistics is outstanding. The slides are simple, but straight to the point. The transition to Pavi is also fluent. Your team has made a good use of the introduction video to show the severity of the problem.

Overall, your group's presentation is very good. Keep up the good work!

  6. Hi Yong Feng!
You looked very confident and calm during the presentation. Your delivery was good too, as you are relatively slow in your speech (yet not too slow), such that ideas can sink into the minds of audiences.

Also, you explain the statistics well. =)

    Overall, good presentation!

  8. Hi... I wrote down quite a lot of things during your performance, and all are good comments haha. You did so differently with the peer teaching. I got your points quite well. You had a great eye contact and transition to the next presenter... Well done! :)

  9. Hi Yong Feng,
I can see from your presentation that you had put in a lot of efforts.
I was impressed by the figure you used during the presentation.(the 7:1 ratio) You did apply what you learned from your core modules to analyze the data you collected, which was very interesting!! :D
Also, I think you had good emphasis on your speech and you had good eye contact with the audience. I could see that you were a bit nervous but you were able to manage it well.
    Good job!

  10. Once again, thanks for all your invaluable feedback.

I noticed that the items that were mostly mentioned were 'transition to next speaker' and 'analysis of statistics'.

Yes, as a statistician-to-be, I believe it's important to interpret the data in a way which allows everyone (young and old) to understand it. It's an important aspect and I have been working hard on that.

To Cosine, as a matter-of-fact, I have always been nervous! Somehow, it doesn't show THAT much though (thankfully).

  11. Hi Yong Feng :D!

I might be the last one commenting here, haha...

I agree with all of them since you really did a good job again!
Hmm... I think your pace was just nice as everything you talked was clear.

Anyway, they all have mentioned your strengths and I shouldn't repeat. What I can say is, well done! :D

  12. I do think I only have one input here, I think it would be more beneficial to put some more slides about the numbers. Since you have conveyed so much information in your part, it would easier for audience to track and understand the comparison with the clear numbers shown to them.If you talk to me with seats number, population number and ratio as well as the survey stats, I would be totally lost. The more important thing is to convert the number into a statement. For others, you were doing really great and I love the clear articulation. Well done!!!
